Try massage to put a new bounce into your day
Our poor feet, we wrap them in shoes and socks, we walk around on them all day, we expect them to perform for us during our sporting pursuits, they have carried us around for our whole lives and yet for most people they are one of the most neglected parts of their bodies.
Countless times I see people who run as a regular part of their training regime and when I ask them whether they would like their feet seen to, the usual answer is “maybe next time, my hammy’s are tight though” or “could you have a look at my calves instead” etc, the feet are the last thing to get looked at, if at all, however once done people usually feel a lot freer and lighter.
The foot is an intricate and complex part of our transport system. They each contain 26 bones, (25% of the total amount in the body). These bones are held together by an amazing array of soft tissues, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. When these structures become dysfunctional through poor biomechanics, posture, and overuse, then the feet become sore tired and achy. Your feet should feel light and vibrant.
It has been said that wrapping them in shoes and then walking on flat surfaces such as pavements and flooring is the equivalent to feeding your feet junk food, not a terribly great thing to do. Choosing the correct footwear is an important part of foot maintenance equally as important is checking your feet for bunions, corns, and other foot problems.
Any dysfunction in the foot can then be translated by way of the kinetic chain up through the body. A collapsed arch could lead to ankle instability which can then affect the knee and further biomechanical changes in your gait, next up the chain is the pelvic girdle… the list goes on.
Foot Massage is a great way to address some of these problems, as well as keeping the foot healthy there is an enormous neurological benefit from foot massage, in fact there is a complete health modality built around treating the feet, reflexology.
The feet are an important part of our anatomy and we expect it them to carry us through the rest of our lives, look after them and they will look after you!
